This was the very first meal I ever made for Casey, back in the first week or two that we were dating. He loved it, but unfortunately it wasn't REAL baked ziti... the day started out horrible, and everything that could go wrong did go wrong. I was scrambling to get something prepared for lunch, because I knew Casey would be to my apartment within the hour. At the last minute I found 3 Baked Ziti Smart Ones (Weight Watcher meals) in my freezer. I tore them out of their packages, stuck them all in a baking dish, and popped it into the oven. When Casey arrived, it smelled as though I had been slaving in the kitchen all morning preparing some elaborate Italian cuisine. He ate every bite and loved it.... A few months after we were married I told him the real story :) This recipe, however, it the real one that I have made several times since that day and it hasn't let me down yet. Hope you enjoy!
Ingredients (serves 4-6)
1 pound dry ziti pasta
1 onion, chopped (optional)
1 pound lean ground beef
2 (26 ounce) jars spaghetti sauce
1 1/2 cups sour cream
6 ounces provolone cheese, shredded
2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese
6 ounces mozzarella cheese, shredded
- Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil.
- Add pasta and cook until al dente, about 8 minutes; drain.
- In a large skillet, brown onion and ground beef over medium heat. Add spaghetti sauce and simmer for 15 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 350*F. Spray a 9x13 inch baking dish with non-stick spray.
- Layer ingredients in the dish as follows: 1/2 of the cooked ziti, provolone cheese, sour cream, 1/2 sauce mixture, remaining ziti, mozzarella cheese and remaining sauce mixture. Top with Parmesan cheese.
- Bake for 30 minutes, or until cheeses are melted.
- Goes great with Caesar salad and garlic bread!
